Hard plastics have been recycled for a while. You may have a white recycling bag or something entirely different, depending on where you live. But soft plastics have been being dumped in the bin…until recently.
Shops like The Cooperative have placed bins in the corner of their buildings for the plastics.
How does plastic get recycled?
Firstly it gets washed and cleaned many times to get rid of contamination.
Then it gets chopped and shredded into tiny pellets which get turned into brand new things.
How do I get involved?
Collect soft plastics such as crisp packets. We put them in either a bread packet or a plastic bag as what you use will also get recycled. Anything soft and flimsy is probably soft plastic.
Next head to your local collection point. If there isn’t a Co-op near you (ask your parents if there is, they’re almost everywhere.) then look online (with parental supervision of course) and find out where you can go. More and more shops are doing it, Co-op is just the one we have seen and used.
When you have arrived, find the bins labelled soft plastic (often by the till or doors) and put in your packets.
There! You have recycled your soft plastics.
